Tokyo Olympics: Women power continues as India’s Kamalpreet Kaur, a debutant in this year’s Olympics Discus thrower showed one of the best performances by an Indian at the sporting event. Kaur finished second at the qualifying round, thus cruising into the finals.
The 25-year-old Kaur was the only second thrower who threw the discus to a distance of 64m in her third, the other being American Valarie Allman (66.42m). She ranked second among the 31 competing women in the qualifiers.
Kaur began with a 60.29m effort and then improved it to 63.97m before her third throw of 64m. Every competitor gets three throws. Those who touch 64m or at least 12 best performers in the two qualifying rounds advance to the final.
The Punjab athlete, threw 65.06m during the Federation Cup in March to break the national record and became the first Indian to breach the 65m mark.
“Women power continues to shine! Congratulations to Kamalpreet Kaur on qualifying for the finals of the women’s Discus Throw final with a 64.00 throw in #TokyoOlympics2020. We wish you all the best,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Kaur and wished her luck for the finals.
On August 2, the country’s eye would be on her, as she will play her finals on that day.
