Digital Desk: Virat Kohli's possible participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season has drawn attention due to Sunil Gavaskar's uncertainty. The legendary cricketer wondered if Virat Kohli would miss the Indian Premier League after he decided not to play in the current Test series against England due to personal reasons.
Royal Challengers Bangalore and the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings are set to square off at Chepauk on March 22 to begin the 24th season of the Indian Premier League. Initially selected for the Indian Test squad, the RCB key player withdrew ahead of the series opener in Hyderabad. Earlier this month, Kohli and his wife, Anushka Sharma, announced the arrival of their second child.
In a conversation with students at the Indian Institute of Management, Ranchi, Gavaskar expressed his opinions, raising doubts about Kohli's determination to score runs in the IPL after taking a break from the game. 'Kya woh khelenge... kuchh reason ke liye khel nahin rahe hain, shaayad ho sakta hai ke IPL ke liye bhi na khele (Will he play... He is not playing because of some reason, perhaps he may not play in IPL as well),' remarked Gavaskar.
Jurel is the next next superstar: Gavaskar's prediction
The Rajasthan Royals' wicketkeeper-batsman, Dhruv Jurel, has the potential to be the IPL season's biggest star, according to Sunil Gavaskar. In just his second Test match, Jurel took home the Man of the Match award for his superb efforts of 90 and an undefeated 39, which helped India defeat England by five wickets to secure the series.
Gavaskar highlighted the potential for Akash Deep to take on the position of RCB's death-over specialist and proposed that Jurel be moved up the order.
Supporting Hardik Pandya as MI captain
Gavaskar also agreed with the Mumbai Indians' (MI) choice to choose Hardik Pandya as captain, which will free up Rohit Sharma to concentrate only on his batting rather than carrying the responsibility of being the team's leader. He thinks the Mumbai Indians will gain from this decision because Hardik will have Rohit Sharma's "captain" leadership.
Excitement over Rishabh Pant's return
Expressing his enthusiasm about Rishabh Pant's return to the game after recovering from a near-fatal car accident, Gavaskar stated, 'I'm also a big fan of him.' He underlined how vital Pant's health is and recommended that the Delhi Capitals captaincy be passed to him once he returns to full health. Gavaskar suggested giving Pant some time to rediscover his form and prevent any setbacks rather than putting him in a leadership position immediately.
