Digital Desk: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has demanded an "urgent and comprehensive explanation" from its coaching staff and selectors in the wake of a disastrous 302-run defeat against India in the 33rd match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.
In a statement released by SLC, the cricketing body expressed deep concern and disappointment over the performance of the Sri Lanka National Team during the ongoing World Cup, especially the humiliating loss to India. The statement also highlighted that the recent string of defeats had raised significant questions about the team's preparation, strategies, and overall performance.
"Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has expressed its deep concern and disappointment over the performance of the Sri Lanka National Team during the ongoing World Cup 2023, particularly the disappointing loss against India yesterday. In light of these concerns, SLC has called for an urgent and comprehensive explanation from the entire coaching staff and selectors," stated SLC.
Furthermore, SLC emphasized that while they had never interfered with the professional staff in carrying out their duties and responsibilities, they firmly believed in accountability, transparency, and addressing concerns promptly.
The Sri Lankan team has faced numerous challenges during the World Cup, with key players such as captain Dasun Shanaka and fast bowlers Matheesha Pathirana and Lahiru Kumara being ruled out due to injuries. In response, the team was forced to bring in replacements, including Chamika Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Dushmantha Chameera, and Kusal Mendis as captain.
In the match against India, the "Men in Blue" set a formidable target of 357 runs after batting first. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli played pivotal roles, amassing 92 and 88 runs, respectively, and building a substantial 189-run partnership. Shreyas Iyer provided valuable support in the middle order, contributing an impressive 82 runs.
In the second inning, the Indian bowling attack was ruthless. Jasprit Bumrah claimed a wicket on the very first ball of Sri Lanka's innings. Mohammed Shami's exceptional five-wicket haul made it extremely challenging for Sri Lanka to mount a comeback, ultimately leading to their dismissal for a mere 55 runs. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah also contributed by taking three and one wicket, respectively. Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket as well.
Sri Lanka's next fixture in the ODI World Cup is against Bangladesh, and the team faces an uphill battle to revive their campaign and address the mounting concerns over their performance. SLC's call for accountability and transparency serves as a stark reminder of the pressure on the team to redeem itself in the remainder of the tournament.
