Digital Desk: Following the announcement that Tom Haines will be benched for 5–6 weeks after breaking a bone of his hand while batting against Leicestershire last week, Cheteshwar Pujara was named Sussex's interim captain on Tuesday.
Pujara has been one of the county's most productive run scorers this year, tallying more than 750 runs in the six County Championship Division 2 games he played.
"Puj was very keen to step up in the absence of Tom; he sees the potential in this side and has been a natural leader ever since he joined," head coach Ian Salisbury said in a public statement.
Finny will continue to be the senior member of our bowling staff, he said, and he did a fantastic job for us after Tom got hurt.
Pujara returned to India's playing XI for the fifth Test match against England at Edgbaston, which was postponed due to rain.
"A batter filling in for Finn allows him to concentrate on leading our attack. Puj is a quality individual with a lot of experience, and I know they will do a great job, "According to the Sussex coach's statement.
Pujara has 766 runs at an average of 109.42 in six matches this season, with the highest score of 203.
So far this season, the right-handed striker has jotted four centuries in his name.
