Good news for Grandmaster Gukesh : No tax for him

Digital Desk : India's young chess player D. Gukesh won an impressive amount of Rs. 11.45 crore as prize money from the FIDE World Champonship. Now, in a surprising development the ministry of Finance has announced a special tax waiver on Gukesh's winnings.

A Finance Ministry official stated, "We recognize the immense pride Gukesh has brought to the country. It is only fitting that we exempt his winnings from taxation, allowing him to invest fully in his future and further hone his craft."

According to Indian tax rules, a 42 percent tax amount would have been imposed on Gukesh. Due to which he would have had to pay around 6 crore as tax. However, Finance Ministry has now announced tax exemption and he will get the full prize money.

He created history by winning the FIDE World Champion on December 12, 2024 held in Singapore. He defeated China's Ding Liren to become the youngest Chess world champion. This victory has earned him a whopping 11.45 crore as prize money. Apart from this, he received a reward of 5 crore from the Tamil Nadu government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many other prominent people of the country congratulated Gukesh Dommaraju after his remarkable achievement. He has become the second Indian after Vishwanathan Anand to win the Championship.

After Gukesh's win, many international Chess players including Magnus Carlsen have criticized the classical chess format. Five time world champion Magnus Carlsen hit out at the format and said that classical chess is the worst way to declare who the best player is.
