Digital Desk: On Sunday, Indian captain Rohit Sharma added another feather to his cap by making his 36th T20 World Cup appearance for India. With this, he surpassed Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan for the most matches played in the tournament; he had previously tied the former Sri Lankan batter in the team's previous game against the Netherlands. With 34 matches under his belt, Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan is the closest current player to Rohit.
Rohit made his debut for India in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, and has since appeared in all eight editions of the tournament. This is his first T20 World Cup as captain of India.
Here's the list of players with the most T20 World Cup appearances:
- Rohit Sharma (India) - 36*
- Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka) - 35
- Dwayne Bravo (West Indies) - 34
- Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) - 34
- Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh) – 34
With 32 appearances in T20 World Cups, Australia's David Warner ranks third in the world.
Rohit's record-breaking appearance in the tournament comes against South Africa in a crucial match in the T20 World Cup's Super 12 stage. India has won both their opening two matches in the tournament (against Pakistan and the Netherlands), and a win against the Proteas will solidify their claim for a semi-final berth.
India had defeated Pakistan by four wickets in a dramatic match in Melbourne and had defeated the Dutch by 56 runs in their second game.
The Rohit Sharma-led team currently leads Group 2 in the Super 12 stage. South Africa, meanwhile, is second with three points from two matches - their first match against Zimbabwe was called off due to rain. On Sunday, Bangladesh defeated Zimbabwe for their second win in the group stage, while Pakistan won their tournament's first match with a six-wicket victory over the Netherlands.
