Digital Desk: Tokyo will host the 2025 World Athletics Championships once again, the sport's global governing body announced on Thursday.
The World Athletics Council confirmed that Tokyo would host the championships for the second time after knocking out Kenya, Poland, and Singapore.
This means that, four years after the Olympic Games were held in an empty stadium because of the pandemic, Tokyo's Olympic Stadium will have the opportunity to host a major athletics event.
Sebastian Coe, the president of World Athletics, said in a statement, "Tokyo presented a "compelling bid" among a very competitive field of contenders to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships."
"I hope that this will be a shining light for Japan as they celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) in 2025, by bringing elite athletic competition back to the people of Tokyo."
The last time the World Championships were held in Tokyo was in 1991. That competition is best remembered for American long-jumper Mike Powell's 8.95-meter (29-foot-4.4-inch) world record-breaking leap, which broke Bob Beamon's long-standing 1968 mark.
The JAAF President, Mitsugi Ogata, stated in a statement, "History has demonstrated that we have the potential and energy to host the world's best athletes and to excite international audiences."
"We guarantee that the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo will be packed with audiences, making it an unforgettable experience for the athletes and everyone involved," Ogata added.
