Ulan-Ude (Russia): Sixth-seeded Indian boxer Manju Rani today settled for the silver medal in the Women’s Boxing Championships held at Ulan-Ude in Russia. She is the first Indian in 18 years – for both men and women –to enter the final in maiden appearance at the World Championships.
Rani advanced to the final yesterday by defeating Thailand’s Chuthamat Raksat by 4-1. However, she was defeated by Russia’s second-seeded Ekaterina Paltceva by an identical margin of 4-1 in the final bout.
It is to be mentioned here that six-times world champion MC Mary Kom (51 kg) along with Jamuna Boro (54 kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) had competed in the World Boxing Championships but had to settle for bronze medals yesterday.
