Alert! Netflix soon to charge extra money for sharing your password

The changes will be applied to the new customers while existing members will be notified 30 days prior to the new pricing.

Digital Desk: Popular video streaming site Netflix is going to charge consumers more for sharing their password outside a single household.

Netflix’s director of product innovation, Chengyi Long, said in a statement, “While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

The primary account owner will receive an email with a code to enable the new sub-accounts as per the video streaming platform. The user must enter the code to confirm that the additional devices are part of their households.

In select locations, the Netflix company will introduce and test two new features, in which members would be charged an additional $2 to $3 for sharing their password with individuals outside their houses. Notably, Netflix recently increased the cost of its subscriptions in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

According to Ampere Analysis, the video streaming giant has roughly 14 million members in the UK and 600,000 in Ireland. The most popular bundle is the regular membership, which includes HD streaming for up to two devices which costs $7.82; however, in the United Kingdom, it costs $9.13.

The changes will be applied to the new customers while existing members will be notified 30 days prior to the new pricing. Netflix raised the price of its monthly subscription tiers in the United States and Canada in January.

After a price increase in January, Netflix’s basic plan, which allows for one stream on one screen at a time and does not include HD streaming, is now $9.99 a month in the United States, up from $8.99.
