An engineer from South Asia who was working for Facebook in California claimed to have severe anxiety while working there.
Digital Desk: Rahul Pandey quit Meta in 2022 after working there for five years as a manager and tech lead, earning around Rs 6.5 crore a year. The engineer from South Asia working for Facebook in California claimed to have severe anxiety while working there.
He has revealed anxiety made him leave his job at the tech giant, where he ended up working for a long period.
Mr Pandey wrote on LinkedIn, "My journey was not a straight shot to counting $100 bills. In fact, for the first six months after I joined Facebook, I was extremely anxious. I felt imposter syndrome as a senior engineer, I struggled to adapt to the company's culture and tooling."
He revealed that he didn't ask his colleague for help because he believed it would "out" him as someone who wasn't deserving of a senior engineering position. Less than a year after he started, Facebook's stock price dropped and the company had internal problems, which further ruined his trust. Many of Pandey's colleagues left to work for other companies during this period of turmoil, and the project he was involved in faced multiple delays.
"However, I felt it was too soon to leave the company because I had only worked there for a year. Instead, I deliberately worked to improve my performance," he stated to Business Insider.
Mr. Pandey was at the height of his creative powers after his second year at Facebook. He created a tool that engineers across many divisions use frequently, which saves a tonne of time. Mr. Pandey stated, "I have sufficient background to oversee projects in addition to the technical expertise to do my assignment. "Being a senior engineer and above (staff or principal engineer) requires this."
He later received a promotion and received shares worth approximately two crores in addition to his basic salary. However, Pandey began searching for alternatives outside of Facebook's parent corporation after learning about COVID-19.
"After three years in the same organisation, I moved teams and took on a manager role for my final year at Facebook. I started looking into the world outside of Meta when 2021 came to an end," he said to the news organisation.
He went on to say, "After almost ten years in tech, I had achieved some degree of financial freedom, and I realised how much more I could learn beyond engineering."
In 2022, Mr. Pandey left the tech giant to found Taro, a business that aims to support the professional development of other software developers.
"A rise in the price of Meta stock and consistent outstanding performance meant that I received more than $800,000 in compensation in 2021. I was among the nation's top 1% of earners of income! At that level, the money doesn't actually feel deserved: luck plays a huge role," he shared.
