Digital Desk: Barbie is releasing a doll with Down syndrome to help more youngsters find a toy that represents them. Mattel (MAT.O) debuted the first Barbie with Down syndrome to broaden the appeal of its iconic doll line.

Mattel said in an official statement released on Tuesday (April 25) that it collaborated with the National Down Syndrome Society in the United States to create a doll with a shorter frame and a longer torso than its other Barbie's.

The creators said on Instagram about the doll range's diversity, "With a shorter frame, rounder face, smaller features, and palms including a single line, this doll introduces a new sculpt and details illustrative of common characteristics of women with Down syndrome."

Aside from that, the dolls are dressed in "community colours and symbols." the post stated.

"She wears matching ankle foot orthotics, and a three-chevron necklace representing the three copies of the 21st chromosome that result in the characteristics associated with Down syndrome - and represents 'the lucky few' who have someone with Down syndrome in their life," stated the post.

Another post, published by the official Barbie account, featured the producers' inclusive collection, which includes all skin tones, races, and disabilities.

"With a variety of skin tones, hair textures, body types, disabilities, and fashions, kids can play out even more stories that reflect themselves and the world around them, and reshape their imagination of what's possible," says the post.

"Our goal is to enable all children to see themselves in Barbie, while also encouraging children to play with dolls who do not look like themselves," said Lisa McKnight, Mattel's Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, in a statement.

Barbie, who first appeared in 1959, has long legs, a petite waist, and flowing blonde hair. Many people criticized Barbie's body shape, claiming that the likelihood of a woman having the same body shape as Barbie was one in a million.

While many people complained that the body form was unrelatable, Mattel launched Curvy Barbie, Tall Barbie, and Petite Barbie, as well as a wide selection of skin tones reflecting many different races, in 2016.
