The foreign ministry of Singapore declares that Rajapaksa has not requested nor been granted asylum...
Digital Desk: Sri Lanka's President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, resigned via email to the parliamentary speaker on Thursday. The news comes after Singapore announced that President Rajapaksa, who left Sri Lanka on Wednesday with his wife, had been granted permission to enter the nation on a private trip. The foreign ministry of Singapore declares that Rajapaksa has not requested nor been granted asylum.
Reportedly, the Sri Lankan Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena had already instructed Gotabaya Rajapaksa that he should submit his letter of resignation as President as soon as possible or else he would consider alternative methods to remove him from office.
On Wednesday, the Parliament Speaker stated that the President had notified him via phone that he would offer his letter of resignation during the day, before midnight. But he hasn't done it yet.
Reportedly, speaker Abeywardena told President Rajapaksa to submit his letter of resignation as soon as possible, saying that he, too, is under pressure. He added that since an acting president has been appointed, the Office of the Speaker is looking into the legal options to evaluate the prospect of "having vacated his post" if the President does not submit his letter of resignation.
