Digital Desk: In a tragic incident, as many as 17 workers were killed and many others were injured after a girder machine fell on them while working on the third phase of the Samruddhi Expressway in the Thane district of Maharashtra on Tuesday.

The device is a specialized mobile gantry crane used for the construction work of bridges.

Following the mishap, two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were deployed to the site to conduct rescue efforts. According to the NDRF, at least five people have been found trapped within the collapsed structure.

However, the machine is used to install precast box girders in highway and high-speed rail bridge construction projects.

Police and fire brigade personnel along with local agencies are also engaged in the rescue operation. The death toll is likely to rise.
