Digital Desk: India and Bhutan have decided to delay Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Thimphu due to adverse weather conditions at Paro airport, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
Originally slated for March 21–22, this trip was expected to be Modi's final overseas engagement before the upcoming general election. The decision was announced by the External Affairs Ministry, which stated that new dates for the visit are being arranged through diplomatic channels.
Modi's agenda included meetings with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, along with discussions with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. This visit aimed to bolster bilateral relations and explore avenues for further cooperation, particularly in infrastructure and connectivity, building on India's substantial support for Bhutan's development plans.
Modi announced during Tobgay's visit that New Delhi's development assistance would be focused on establishing infrastructure and fostering connectivity and that India would increase its support for Bhutan's 13th five-year plan, including taking into account a proposal for an economic stimulus programme.
Bhutan's five-year plans are primarily funded by Indian assistance; during the 12th plan, New Delhi gave aid of ₹5,000 crore.
