Digital Desk: In a tragic accident, two people were killed, and at least 20 others were injured after 18 coaches of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailed in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district on early Tuesday. The derailment occurred around 3:45 am near Barabamboo, approximately 80 km from Jamshedpur, within the Chakradharpur Division of the South Eastern Railway (SER). The collision took place when a passenger train coming from the opposite direction crashed into a derailed goods train.
The accident involved 16 passenger coaches, one power car, and one pantry car, according to SER spokesperson Om Prakash Charan. In response to the disaster, a special control room has been set up at Howrah railway station. Due to the accident, three express trains have been canceled.
The injured passengers have been transported to hospitals in Phatepani and Seraikela for treatment. The rescue efforts are underway, with 80 percent of the passengers already sent to Chakradharpur station by bus. A rescue train has arrived to assist with clearing the remaining passengers.
Rescue teams are actively working at the site, with additional support from a police team from West Bengal and NDRF teams from Patna. The West Bengal government is coordinating closely with Jharkhand officials, and two special rescue teams have been dispatched to Chakradharpur to aid in the response.
