Jorhat, July 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged the expedited repair of all five damaged sections of the Bhogdoi river embankment in Jorhat within a month, an assurance that comes as several parts of the district continue to grapple with floodwaters. The Chief Minister also indicated that a comprehensive long-term strategy would be developed to fortify the crucial flood protection structure.
The commitment was made during the Chief Minister's inspection of the breached embankment at Salmora on Wednesday. Heavy rainfall originating from the Naga Hills had caused the Bhogdoi River to swell significantly, leading to multiple breaches that subsequently inundated vast areas of Jorhat district.
"Approximately five sections of the embankment have suffered breaches. I personally assessed the situation today, and I assure you that all five breaches will be mended within one month," Sarma stated. He further elaborated that repair work would commence in phases over the coming weeks, alongside the formulation of a robust plan for the embankment's sustained strengthening.
Addressing concerns regarding the potential displacement of residents living along the riverbanks, Chief Minister Sarma clarified that any decisions on eviction would strictly follow consultations with local inhabitants. He acknowledged that many indigenous Assamese families have resided in these areas for decades, underscoring the need for a sensitive approach.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that measures such as dredging the Bhogdoi River were under consideration as part of the broader effort to mitigate future flood risks in the region.
