Assam continues to grapple with a grim flood situation, with the death toll rising to 78 as water levels begin to recede in many areas. Despite some respite in the flood-affected districts, particularly in Upper Assam, state authorities remain on high alert following new weather predictions from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The widespread deluge has impacted more than 3 lakh people across the state. In the latest update, three fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours—two from Sivasagar district and one from Golaghat—bringing the cumulative death count to 78 for this year's flood season. Charaideo district is currently reported as the worst-hit region.
Adding to the concerns, the IMD has issued a forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, at isolated places across Assam, neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland over the next three days. This prediction raises significant apprehension for districts bordering these two states, potentially exacerbating the current situation.
Officials from the state disaster management authority noted that the absence of rain in most Upper Assam districts has allowed water levels to recede from inundated villages, offering some much-needed relief to residents. However, the impending heavy showers could pose renewed challenges, particularly in areas still recovering from the initial onslaught.
