  • Assam is grappling with a severe flood crisis, reporting 21 new fatalities in the last 24 hours, including nine women and children, as the total death toll climbs to 31 this year

Assam is grappling with a deepening flood crisis, with the state reporting a grim toll of 21 flood-related fatalities within the last 24 hours. This surge tragically includes nine women and children, underscoring the severe impact on vulnerable populations. The latest figures push the total number of flood-related deaths across the state to 31 this year, as relentless rainfall and overflowing rivers continue to wreak havoc, particularly in Upper Assam.

According to official reports released late Tuesday, four children and five women were among those who succumbed to the floods during this period. Sivasagar district accounted for four of these recent deaths, while Jorhat reported one. Sivasagar remains the hardest-hit district, with a total of 13 fatalities recorded since the onset of the monsoon season.

The increasing number of child casualties follows a distressing incident on July 20, when two teenage girls, Susmita Mardha and Chuniya Pahariya from Panbari village in Jorhat, were swept away by the strong currents of the swollen Doi Jaan stream. Another boy was also reported missing in Karbi Anglong. In response to these tragedies, Titabor MLA Dhiraj Gowala has urged parents to exercise extreme caution and keep children away from rivers, streams, and other water bodies during the current monsoon.

Amidst the ongoing relief operations, the Chief Minister has assured the public that there will be no shortage of funds for flood relief efforts, particularly for communities in Upper Assam. This assurance comes as state agencies intensify their efforts to provide assistance and mitigate the impact on affected areas.
