Assam's devastating flood crisis escalated significantly on Tuesday, with reports confirming 21 additional deaths across several districts. This grim update brings the total number of fatalities in the current wave of floods to 31, as vast swathes of the state grapple with rising water levels and widespread displacement.
The latest casualties include 13 individuals from Sivasagar district, five from Charaideo, two from Golaghat, and one from Jorhat. Beyond the tragic loss of life, the deluge has severely impacted more than 5.6 lakh residents across 16 districts. Sivasagar remains the worst-hit region, with nearly 3.6 lakh persons directly affected by the relentless floodwaters, highlighting the immense challenge faced by local communities and authorities.
As the crisis deepens, humanitarian efforts are underway to provide shelter and aid. By Tuesday night, over 12,200 individuals had been relocated to 71 operational relief camps established across the affected areas. These camps are crucial in offering temporary refuge and essential supplies to those displaced from their homes.
The situation is further compounded by several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Disang, and Dikhou, which are flowing above their danger marks. This poses an ongoing threat of further inundation and hinders rescue and relief operations. Authorities continue to monitor the water levels closely, with state disaster management agencies working tirelessly to manage the evolving situation and mitigate further losses.
