The grim reality of Assam's flood situation has intensified with the official death toll now standing at 62. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the updated figures on Saturday via a social media post, expressing condolences for the departed souls. The announcement follows a comprehensive review of the flood situation he conducted with district officials on Friday.
Despite some reports of improvement in various affected regions, the humanitarian crisis remains severe in certain pockets. Chief Minister Sarma specifically noted that Sivasagar and Charaideo districts continue to face critical conditions. Thousands remain cut off from essential services, with approximately 30 percent of the Nazira constituency, affecting around 50,000 people, and 20 percent of the Sivasagar constituency, impacting roughly 30,000 residents, still inaccessible. Road communication to these areas has been severely disrupted, making aid delivery a formidable challenge.
Adding to the concern, eight individuals are reported missing across the state: six from Nazira, one from Charaideo, and another from Karbi Anglong. Authorities are mobilizing country boats to distribute much-needed relief supplies to the stranded populations. Initial attempts at air-dropping aid packages using helicopters and drones have met with difficulties, as packages are reportedly bursting upon impact. Discussions are currently underway with the Indian Air Force to find more effective methods for aerial relief distribution.
