Guwahati witnessed significant power disruptions this past Wednesday evening, July 22, as relentless floodwaters swept across Assam, leaving over 82,000 consumers without electricity. The calamity, predominantly impacting the upper Assam districts, forced extensive precautionary measures by power authorities.
Reports indicate that approximately 1,730 distribution transformers and 11 KV feeders had to be taken offline to prevent further damage and ensure safety amidst the rising water levels. In Jorhat, a 33/11 kv substation also experienced an outage, while four 33 kv lines and five 11 kv lines were identified as faulty by Wednesday evening, according to an official assessment.
Sivasagar district bore the brunt of the power crisis, with over 62,000 consumers initially affected. While restoration efforts managed to bring power back to 48,100 households by Wednesday evening, the district saw three 33/11 kv substations and 22 11 kv feeders disconnected. A staggering 1,371 distribution transformers were also shut down in Sivasagar alone.
Jorhat district also faced considerable challenges, with more than 10,700 consumers experiencing power outages. Officials explained that continuous heavy rainfall and widespread flooding were the primary reasons for the disconnections of feeders and distribution transformers across various areas. They emphasized that shutdowns on 33 kv lines were implemented as essential precautionary measures.
Restoration work is currently underway in the affected regions. Authorities have appealed for public cooperation, noting that the situation is dynamic and improvements in field conditions will facilitate swifter recovery of power services.
