  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for families of flood victims, as Upper Assam battles severe inundation, with approximately 70 people still unaccounted for in Sivasagar district alone

As incessant rains continue to wreak havoc across Upper Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced a significant ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim. The announcement comes amidst deepening concerns over the scale of human loss, particularly in Sivasagar district, where approximately 70 individuals are reportedly still missing following the devastating floods.

During a visit to Sivasagar, one of the worst-affected regions, the Chief Minister interacted with flood-hit families, assuring them of sustained government support. He stated that the administration is committed to standing by the affected communities through every phase of rehabilitation and rebuilding their livelihoods, acknowledging the extensive damage caused by the natural calamity.

Sivasagar has emerged as the epicentre of the current flood crisis, with nearly 3.6 lakh residents impacted. The neighbouring districts of Jorhat and Charaideo are also grappling with severe inundation, affecting almost 88,000 and over 72,500 people, respectively. The Chief Minister's review of the flood situation extended to Charaideo before his interactions in Sivasagar.

The ongoing efforts to locate the missing persons in Sivasagar remain a priority, even as relief operations intensify across the inundated areas, highlighting the profound challenges faced by the state in the wake of this unprecedented natural disaster.
