  • Thousands displaced and hundreds of villages submerged in Assam as the southwest monsoon intensifies, triggering landslides in the Himalayas and prompting severe rain s nationwide

Assam is currently grappling with a severe and worsening flood crisis as the southwest monsoon intensifies its relentless downpour across the region. Thousands of residents have been displaced, with reports indicating that 872 villages are now submerged, causing extensive damage to homes and vast tracts of farmland. The continuous rise in river levels, fueled by persistent rainfall, has brought daily life to a standstill in many affected areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest weather update issued on the morning of July 23, 2026, has highlighted the widespread impact of the active monsoon system across the country. 'Red Alerts' for extremely heavy rainfall have been issued for Gujarat and Maharashtra, where authorities are bracing for potential threats to urban areas, critical infrastructure, and agricultural sectors. Several other states, including Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, are also under 'Orange' and 'Yellow' s, signifying heavy to very heavy rainfall expectations.

Concurrently, the Himalayan states are facing perilous conditions due to the persistent rains, which have triggered numerous dangerous landslides. These events have severely disrupted essential transportation networks, including key roads and pilgrimage routes, significantly impacting connectivity and daily routines in the mountainous regions.

Even the Delhi-NCR region is experiencing cloudy skies with a higher chance of rainfall. Amidst these varied weather phenomena, authorities across India are urging citizens and farmers to exercise extreme caution, stay updated with official advisories, and implement necessary safety measures to mitigate risks posed by the ongoing severe weather conditions.
