The Assam government has earmarked a substantial sum of Rs 35 crore in its current budget for the comprehensive development of the revered Madhupur Dham. This historic Vaishnavite shrine, situated in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district, is poised for significant infrastructure enhancements, a move expected to boost pilgrim footfall and stimulate the local economy.

Located within the Madhupur Gram Panchayat area of Cooch Behar-II block, the Dham holds profound historical and spiritual significance, particularly for the people of Assam. Notably, the administration and all maintenance expenses of this sacred site are borne entirely by the Assam government, underscoring its deep cultural and religious ties to the state.

Madhupur Dham is historically revered as the place where the illustrious 15th-century Vaishnavite saint and social reformer from Assam, Srimanta Shankardev, spent his final years after accepting an invitation from Maharaja Nara Narayan. His chief disciple, Madhavdev, also concluded his life at this very spot. The shrine stands today as a living memorial to their spiritual legacy, attracting a steady stream of devotees and visitors from Assam, West Bengal, and other parts of India throughout the year. An annual week-long fair, coinciding with Saraswati Puja, further draws thousands to the site.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced this significant allocation, expressing the state's commitment to preserving and enhancing the facilities at this vital heritage site. The funds are expected to facilitate various development projects aimed at improving amenities for pilgrims and ensuring the long-term preservation of the Dham's historical and spiritual essence.
