  • Assam Public Works (APW) has formally urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, upon acclaimed educationist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk

A prominent civil society organization from Assam, Assam Public Works (APW), has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recommending that the Bharat Ratna be bestowed upon Sonam Wangchuk. The appeal highlights Wangchuk's significant contributions to education, innovation, and environmental sustainability, particularly in the challenging Himalayan region.

Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer, innovator, and education reformist from Ladakh, is widely recognized for his groundbreaking initiatives. He founded the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an alternative school that empowers local youth with practical skills and knowledge. His innovative solutions, such as the Ice Stupas, address water scarcity in cold desert areas, demonstrating a unique blend of traditional wisdom and modern science to combat climate change.

The APW, known for its advocacy on various public issues in Assam, emphasized Wangchuk's inspirational leadership and his profound impact on society. The organization believes that honouring him with the Bharat Ratna would not only acknowledge his exceptional service to the nation but also serve as an inspiration for future generations to pursue innovation and social responsibility with dedication and foresight.

The Bharat Ratna, instituted in 1954, is awarded in recognition of exceptional service or performance of the highest order, without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. The APW's call underscores a growing recognition from the Northeast for individuals whose work transcends regional boundaries and contributes significantly to national welfare.
