  • Assam's prized Muga silk recently received international recognition through a high-profile diplomatic gesture, coinciding with the state government's launch of 'Mission SenehJori' to bolster the sector

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a Muga silk stole to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his five-nation tour in May, it underscored the global appeal of Assam’s iconic textile. This diplomatic gesture brought significant international attention to Muga silk, often referred to as the 'golden silk' of the Brahmaputra Valley, celebrated for its unique natural sheen and production without artificial dyes.

As one of India's rarest and most prestigious textiles, Muga silk embodies a rich legacy of traditional craftsmanship and sustainable practices. The recognition from a nation renowned for its luxury fashion houses highlighted the potential for Assam's golden silk to resonate on the global stage, aligning with Italy’s own heritage of refined design.

This newfound international spotlight is now complemented by a significant domestic policy initiative. Recently, Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, alongside Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, launched 'Mission SenehJori'. This ambitious Assam government programme aims to revitalise and transform the state’s renowned Muga sector.

Officials indicated that 'Mission SenehJori' is designed to bolster the entire value chain of Muga silk production, from cultivation to weaving and marketing. The initiative seeks to empower local artisans and ensure the sustainability of this unique heritage, which is crucial for the economic well-being of many communities across Assam.

The twin focus on global recognition and robust domestic support positions Assam’s Muga silk at a pivotal moment, promising to safeguard its traditional essence while expanding its reach and securing its future.
