Ms. Hasina, who had just begun her fifth term as Prime Minister earlier this year, has left Dhaka in a military helicopter...

Digital Desk: Amidst intense protests demanding Sheikh Hasina's resignation, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has stepped down, and the Army is now taking control. General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the head of the Bangladesh Army, has urged the protesters to embrace peace and announced that the Army will establish an interim government.

He stated, "Our country is in crisis. I have consulted with Opposition leaders, and we have agreed to form an interim government to manage the country. I assume full responsibility and assure the protection of your lives and property. Your demands will be met. Please support us and cease the violence. Cooperation will lead us to a proper solution, as violence will not achieve anything."

Ms. Hasina, who had just begun her fifth term as Prime Minister earlier this year, has left Dhaka in a military helicopter and is possibly heading to a safer location in India. Her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, is accompanying her.

In the meantime, local media reports indicate that protesters have taken over Gono Bhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence. It appears the Bangladesh Army is attempting a power grab and has reportedly given the Prime Minister a 45-minute ultimatum to resign. Disturbing images of demonstrators vandalizing a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ms. Hasina's father and a key figure in Bangladesh’s fight for independence, are circulating in Dhaka.
