The Union Government has stated its willingness to consider granting same-sex couples with some rights...

Digital Desk: The Supreme Court of India is expected to deliver its judgment on the batch of petitions seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriages in India soon.

Before Justice Bhat retires on October 20, 2023, the verdict is likely to be announced.

The Union Government has stated its willingness to consider granting same-sex couples with some rights, such as the ability to create joint bank accounts and designate one partner as the beneficiary of life insurance policies.

The petitioners' argument that the Special Marriage Act's use of the terms "husband" and "wife" should be gender-neutral has been opposed by the government.

While the Delhi Commission for the Protection of Child Rights has expressed the petitions and supported the right of same-sex couples to adopt, the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights raised concerns about allowing same-sex couples to adopt.

The LGBTQIA+ community is eagerly awaiting the case's outcome.

A favourable decision will represent a significant turning point for LGBTQIA+ rights in India.
