Digital Desk:  After 18 years of married life, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, announced their divorce on Wednesday.

Justin Trudeau aged 51, is a descendant of one of Canada's most famous leaders. Sophie Trudeau is a former model and television host. In 2005, the couple married. They have three children: Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrien, 9 years old.

"Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,"  Trudeau wrote on Instagram.

According to the Associated Press, Trudeau and Sophie have signed a legal separation agreement.

"They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps regarding their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward," the PMO statement said, according to Reuters.

People should respect the couple's privacy for the sake of their children, stated the couple.

Trudeau is the second prime minister to disclose his divorce while still in office. Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau, and mother, Margaret Trudeau, divorced in 1984, during the elder Trudeau's final year as prime minister, as stated by the report.
