Digital Desk: The 23rd Chennai International Film Festival is set to host the world premiere of ‘Moromor Deuta’, a newly produced Assamese film based on the acclaimed novel by renowned writer and filmmaker Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia. The festival, to be held in Chennai from December 11 to 18, will screen the film for the first time.
Directed by Himjyoti Talukdar and produced by Mamta Mahilary, Moromor Deuta presents a powerhouse cast consisting of a promising new actor of Assamese cinema, Bodhisattva Sharma, who is already a name on the national stage. The film also stars Mintu Baruah, Aparna Dutta Choudhury, Gaurav Bora, Arun Nath, Kul Kuldeep, along with several other new and veteran performers.
The original novel, written by Dr. Saikia, was first serialized in the children's magazine ‘Xofura’ in 1989. In due course of time, it came to be considered one of the best Assamese adolescent-centric novels. Throughout the 1990s, the book formed part of the course structure in different educational institutions across Assam, which valued its strong display of teenage psychology and emotional family bonding.
Reflecting on the film adaptation and its prestigious premiere, Mrs. Preeti Saikia, trustee of the Bhabendra Nath Saikia Children Welfare Trust and wife of the late author-filmmaker, said:
“Moromor Deuta’s cinematic version and its first screening at the Chennai International Film Festival is a proud and significant moment. Dr. Saikia wrote this novel with deep sincerity, and it has touched generations of readers. I hope the film will help present his creations meaningfully to the new generation.”
The Filmmakers believe that ‘ Moromor Deuta’ will help reconnect modern-day audiences with the timeless piece of Assamese literature while introducing the legacy of Dr. Saikia to a wider national and international audience. Plans are underway for a 2026 cinema release in Assam and elsewhere in India.
