MP Gaurav Gogoi raises concerns about the 'one nation, one election' bill on Tuesday…

Digital Desk: MP Gaurav Gogoi raises concerns about the  'one nation, one election' bill on Tuesday. Arguing during the ongoing winter session of Parliament, Gogoi said that this bill goes against the constitution and infringes upon the voting rights of the people of India. Calling the bill unconstitutional he countered Union Minister Amit Shah's statement saying that this bill is against democratic values.

Slamming the bill, Gaurav Gogoi said that it is an 'attack on federalism'. According to him, simultaneous elections have no major impact on the Union budget despite the government's claim. He also urged the Election Commission to answer a lot of questions before giving such powers to the government. He further said that it is an attempt to undermine the right to vote for Indian citizens.

Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor also slammed the government and said that voting for the introduction of two bills in Lok Sabha showed that BJP does not have the required two third majority for an amendment.

It is to be mentioned that the 'one nation, one election' bill was approved by the Union Cabinet to pave its way for simultaneous elections of both Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly along with Urban and rural bodies.

The BJP led NDA alliance welcomed the bill saying that simultaneous elections would reduce expenses and save time.  But the bill initiated debate between the ruling and opposition parties. The INDIA bloc expressed their dissatisfaction by stating that this bill is Anti-Democratic and violation of the basic structure of the constitution.

Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi in a post on X said that simultaneous election is an important step towards making our democracy vibrant and participative.
