Digital Desk: Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's security cover has been upgraded to the 'Z' category, sources from the Union Home Ministry have confirmed.

Earlier, Jaishankar was given a ‘Y’ category security cover. The decision to upgrade the minister's security level to the third-highest degree was reportedly influenced by an alarming threat assessment provided by the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

The Union Home Ministry conducts regular meetings to evaluate threats against prominent figures in the country. During its latest session, concerns over potential threats to the Union Minister came to the forefront.

Sources have indicated that a total of 36 security personnel, including members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), will be deployed to ensure Jaishankar's safety under the 'Z' category. Furthermore, a comprehensive security team will comprise 12 armed static guards stationed at the minister's residence, six Personal Security Officers (PSOs), 12 armed escort commandos operating in three shifts, three watchers on rotating shifts, and three trend drivers available round-the-clock.

The upgrade underscores the government's commitment to safeguarding its key officials in the face of perceived security risks.
