Digital Desk: On November 10, former Nagaland governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya passed away


Acharya was named Governor of Nagaland on July 14, 2014, after President Pranab Mukherjee accepted the resignation of Tripura Governor Vakkom Purushothaman. His term as Governor ended in July 2019.


Acharya was born in the Karnataka district of Udupi. He graduated from Christian High School in Udupi and attended the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Udupi. 


He worked in Mumbai after graduation and was a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Mumbai University Senate. He also earned an LL.B from Mumbai University.

He was credited for defining the Gyanodaya Express College on Wheels to North East India for the University of Delhi. 


Acharya also served as governor of Tripura and Assam, as well as governor of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.


Acharya has formerly held positions in the BJP, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, and the BJP. He was the second person from coastal Karnataka to be chosen for the Governor's seat, following Margaret Alva, and the first from the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin community.


Between 1995 and 2001, he was the BJP's national secretary while Narendra Modi was the party's national general secretary.
