  • The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for widespread heavy rainfall across Assam over the next 24 hours, raising concerns about renewed flooding and landslides as the state grapples with recent devastation

Even as parts of Assam observe a gradual recession of floodwaters, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for heavy rainfall, signalling a potential exacerbation of the state's monsoon woes. This forecast casts a shadow over ongoing recovery efforts, with fears of new deluges and landslides gripping communities still reeling from one of the season's most severe flood episodes.

The latest weather advisory comes at a critical time for Assam, which has already witnessed significant loss and displacement. Previous floods this season claimed 78 lives, impacting over three lakh people across various districts. While many residents were beginning to return to their homes as water levels slowly dropped, the prospect of renewed downpours threatens to halt or even reverse this fragile progress.

According to the IMD, active southwest monsoon conditions are expected to persist over northeastern India, bringing widespread rainfall to Assam over the next 24 hours. The weather office has specifically warned of heavy rainfall in isolated areas, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, which could further complicate an already challenging situation. Damaged roads, extensive mud deposits, and compromised infrastructure continue to impede relief and rehabilitation work in numerous affected zones. The anticipated heavy rain could intensify these issues, making access to vulnerable populations even more difficult and prolonging the return to normalcy for hundreds of thousands still impacted by the earlier floods.
