Guwahati, June 7: The journalistic fraternity in Assam was recently acknowledged at the annual Devarshi Narad Jayanti celebration held at Sudarshanalaya in Barbari, Guwahati. The event, organised by Vishwa Samvad Kendra (VSK) Assam, saw veteran Assamese journalist Nava Thakuria conferred with the esteemed Devarshi Narad Jayanti Award.
In addition to honouring seasoned talent, the ceremony also recognised the contributions of emerging journalists. Ranjita Rabha from Pratham Khabar News Channel, Lakhyajit Gohain of NK Television, and Mridul Haloi representing Dainik Asom were felicitated for their work and dedication to the field.
A highlight of the programme was an address by Prakhar Shrivastava, senior consulting editor and anchor at Delhi Doordarshan Kendra. Shrivastava delved into various contemporary socio-political issues, the evolving landscape of journalism, and significant historical developments. During his discourse, he underscored the critical importance of factual reporting, cautioning that the propagation of half-truths can often be more damaging than outright fabrications.
Shrivastava also took the opportunity to reflect on the role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as it approaches its centenary year. He discussed the historical context surrounding the Partition of India, specifically highlighting what he described as the assistance provided by RSS volunteers to refugees migrating from Sindh and other regions now part of Pakistan. He further referenced correspondence from then Defence Minister Baldev Singh, offering historical perspective on the period.
The celebration served as a platform to both honour journalistic excellence and stimulate discussion on the ethical responsibilities and historical context that shape media's role in society.
