ISRO has selected four astronauts from the Indian Air Force for the Gaganyaan mission, all of whom are undergoing strict training...

Digital Desk: Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Chief S Somnath has officially revealed the timeline for India’s first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan. The much-anticipated project is set to take a significant step forward in December with the launch of the first unmanned mission, marking a major milestone in India’s space exploration ambitions.

This announcement comes on the heels of the successful third flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), which successfully entered Earth's orbit on Friday.

The Gaganyaan mission, a cornerstone of India’s space aspirations, is advancing steadily toward its December launch. According to Somnath, ISRO has already transported the three crucial stages of the rocket to the Sriharikota Space Range, where final preparations are now in progress.

The upcoming mission, designated as G1, will be an unmanned flight designed to test and validate the reliability of the systems before human astronauts are sent into space.

ISRO has selected four astronauts from the Indian Air Force for the Gaganyaan mission, all of whom are undergoing strict training. However, this first mission will focus on testing critical systems such as the crew module and crew escape hardware, which are being assembled at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Trivandrum.

In parallel, ISRO is developing a second rocket launch center in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu, expected to be operational within two years. This new facility will support future launches, particularly for the SSLV. The recent success of the SSLV mission has also opened avenues for potential technology transfers to the industry, with discussions already underway and a Request for Information (RFI) issued to initiate the process.

As December approaches, anticipation for Gaganyaan’s launch is building, promising to show a new era in India’s space journey.
