  • Artists, writers, and digital creators gathered at Barnagar College, Sorbhog, to discuss and promote the Kamrupi dialect, addressing its creative potential and the challenges it faces in gaining wider recognition

A significant gathering of artists, writers, cultural practitioners, and digital content creators recently took place at Barnagar College in Sorbhog, underscoring concerted efforts to elevate the Kamrupi dialect as a medium for serious creative and intellectual work. Held on July 21, the programme brought together diverse voices from literature, art, and new media to share their experiences and strategies for utilising Kamrupi.

Discussions at the event delved into both the unique possibilities presented by this non-standardised linguistic variety and the inherent challenges it faces. A key point of debate was the struggle for Kamrupi to achieve the same cultural legitimacy and widespread acceptance currently enjoyed by standard Assamese, often leading to its misrepresentation.

Among the speakers, Dr. Amiya Mahanata shared insights into her ongoing project to compile a comprehensive dictionary of words specific to the Kamrupi region, a vital step towards linguistic preservation. YouTube content creator Riki Bharali highlighted his initiatives to document and promote traditional culinary practices from western Assam, expressing concern over the diminishing knowledge of local dishes among younger generations. Cartoonist Nituparna Rajbangshi spoke about his work in representing Kamrupi culture through visual art, while filmmaker Kangkan Deka discussed his Kamrupi-dialect film, 'Upasarga'.

The collective effort showcased at the Sorbhog event highlighted a growing movement to counter stereotypes and ensure the Kamrupi dialect receives its due recognition as a vibrant and rich cultural vehicle. Participants emphasised the importance of continued engagement to preserve its unique heritage for future generations.
