The High Court noted significant delays and insufficient progress in the ongoing investigation, stating that even after five days, there had been no meaningful advancement.

Digital Desk: The Calcutta High Court  on Tuesday transferred the investigation into the murder and rape of a trainee doctor in Kolkata to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The decision came after a division bench, led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, reviewed a petition from the victim's parents seeking a court-monitored probe. Several other petitions also called for a CBI investigation.

The High Court noted significant delays and insufficient progress in the ongoing investigation, stating that even after five days, there had been no meaningful advancement. The court expressed concern that if the investigation continued in its current state, it could fail to produce results.

"In normal circumstances, we would have requested a progress report," the bench said. "However, given the peculiar nature of this case and the lack of significant progress, we find it necessary to expedite the process to prevent any potential loss of evidence," and thus, transferred the investigation to the CBI.

The body of the woman, a postgraduate trainee, was discovered in a seminar hall at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital on the morning of August 9. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested the following day and has confessed to the crime. The autopsy report indicated severe injuries and bleeding.

The court also criticized the Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for a lack of proactive response. In the wake of the scandal, Sandip Ghosh, the principal, resigned on Monday but was promptly appointed to another college.
