A complaint was filed at a Kolkata police station, leading to an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Bharat Nyay Sanhita.

Digital Desk: A 23-year-old college student has been arrested for allegedly posting inappropriate comments about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and revealing the identity of a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at a Kolkata hospital.

Kirti Sharma was taken into custody from her Lake Town residence on Sunday by Kolkata Police. She is accused of sharing three Instagram stories related to the rape and murder of the 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The police allege that Sharma's posts-old disclosed the victim's picture and identity, which is a punishable offense. Additionally, Sharma is charged with sharing two stories containing "offensive comments" and threats directed at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. According to the police, these posts-old were "provocative" and had the potential to incite social unrest and foster communal hatred.

A complaint was filed at a Kolkata police station, leading to an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Bharat Nyay Sanhita. Following this complaint, Sharma was arrested on Sunday afternoon and is expected to appear before a sessions court today.

Soumya Subhra Rat, Sharma’s attorney, questioned the urgency of the arrest, suggesting it might be an attempt to placate higher authorities. "The FIR was filed on August 17, and the arrest was made on August 18. The police acted swiftly, arresting the suspect without investigation or prior notice," Rat told India Today.

This arrest comes amid widespread outrage and protests from the medical community over the brutal rape and murder of the doctor.
Previously, Kolkata Police had issued summonses to former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two senior doctors for allegedly spreading rumors and disclosing the victim's identity. Additionally, 57 others have been summoned for spreading false information about the case, according to a police official.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal noted last week that the spread of rumors has hampered the investigation and threatened public order.
