The 43-year-old farmer consumed poison in his field at Shivni Armal village on Thursday morning.

Digital Desk: A farmer from Maharashtra's western Vidarbha, Kailash Arjun Nagare, who received the Maharashtra government's prestigious Young Farmer Award in 2020 for his contributions to agriculture, died by suicide. The 43-year-old farmer consumed poison in his field at Shivni Armal village on Thursday morning.

Nagare, a well-known farmer leader in the region, blamed the government for declining his demand for irrigation water to 14 villages in his 3-page suicide note. He also staged a 10-day hunger strike in 2024 to fulfill farmers' demands.

His suicide note focused on the lack of sufficient irrigation in the drought-prone western Vidarbha area. Nagare is survived by his father, wife, and three children.

Following Nagare's death, thousands of farmers protested against the government and declared that his body would not be allowed to be taken for postmortem unless any officials of the administration visited the area.

Blaming the administration for her husband's death, Nagare's wife Sushila Nagare said that he took the extreme step due to the government's negligence. He fought for the farmers' rights but did not get anything from the administration.
