Digital Desk: Given Mumbai's ongoing extensive rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its 'red alert' in Mumbai until 8:30 a.m. on Friday. The first alert was issued on Wednesday.
The city is expected to receive 'very heavy' rainfall in a few locations until Friday, despite original predictions that the intensity of the rains would begin to decrease today. Officials forecast steady showers over the following two days, and a dry spell is unlikely before the first week of August.
South Mumbai experienced exceptionally heavy precipitation throughout the day until 8.30 a.m. Colaba received 223.2mm of rain, while Santacruz in the suburbs received 145.1mm. This is much higher than the previous day's readings of 23mm and 29mm, respectively.

Bandra received 106mm of rain, Dahisar 70.5mm, Ram Mandir 161mm, Chembur 86.5mm, Byculla 119mm, CSMT 153.5mm, Matunga 78.5mm, and Sion received 112mm.
Due to the rain, schools in the city have been ordered to close. Waterlogging was also recorded on the posh Maharshi Karve Road in South Mumbai, between Churchgate station and Charni Road East.
Although no serious accidents had been recorded as of 1 pm on Thursday, there is a high likelihood of interruption in traffic, local train, and bus services.
