Hundreds of Muslim residents in Assam's Cachar district recently staged a significant protest against the state's newly enacted Uniform Civil Code (UCC) legislation. The demonstration, which took place outside a mosque in the Berenga area following Friday prayers, saw participants raising slogans and demanding the law's immediate withdrawal.
Protesters voiced strong concerns, asserting that the UCC unfairly targets the Muslim community and undermines their religious freedom. Among those present was former MLA Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuiya, who addressed the gathering and critically assessed the legislation. Mazarbhuiya reportedly described the UCC as an affront to religious liberty and a threat to Assam's rich cultural diversity.
Speaking to media representatives, the former legislator further alleged that the Uniform Civil Code was being implemented in a biased manner, specifically aiming at Islamic personal laws and the Muslim populace. He contended that the legislation appeared to operate on a premise that existing Muslim personal laws were somehow insufficient or inadequate, a claim that has fueled considerable apprehension within the community. The widespread sentiment among demonstrators was that the state's new legal framework intrudes upon long-standing religious practices and personal laws, which many consider integral to their identity.
This protest in Cachar underscores the growing apprehension and dissent among a section of the Muslim community in Assam regarding the implications of the Uniform Civil Code.
