Digital Desk: Assam paracyclist Rakesh Banik from Nagaon district is set to embark on a historic 9,000-kilometre journey from Moscow, Russia, to Guwahati next month. His solo journey will be India's first long-distance attempt by a specially abled cyclist.
Rakesh, also known as 'Rakesh para-cyclist,' aims to promote tourism in Assam and support the Fit India Movement within four months.
He will undertake the 'Volga to Brahmaputra' expedition, covering the Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tibet, Nepal, and then India through Siliguri, Kolkata.
Rakesh Banik said that his journey is about breaking barriers and proving that no challenge is too big to overcome. It is a privilege for him to represent his country and state. With this journey, he expressed his willingness to inspire others to embrace adventure, fitness, and perseverance.
The para cyclist recounted his journey into this adventure field due to a life-changing event in the year 2012. He met with a dreadful road accident, was admitted to a private hospital in Guwahati, and lost one leg due to a medical error.
Following the incident, he had to deal with severe depression and was overwhelmed by suicidal thoughts.
