Digital Desk: The NASA crew astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have finally returned to Earth after completing their unexpected nine-month extended-time space mission. The Crew-9 Dragon spacecraft executed its successful ocean landing near the coast of Florida, waters after its lengthy assignment at the International Space Station (ISS).
Due to the effects of prolonged space travel both of the astronauts need to complete a 45-day rehabilitation program as prolonged space travel can cause condition such as muscle loss, reduced bone density in addition to balance issues and impaired vision. It will also help them to readjust to Earth’s gravity . NASA will maintain a strict health surveillance to guarantee the astronauts recover smoothly and successfully.
Why Was Sunita Williams Stuck in Space?
The original objective of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft mission in June 2024 was to conduct brief testing operations with Williams and Wilmore on board. The spacecraft became unsafe after propulsion system failures that forced Williams and Wilmore to stay at the ISS without the possibility of returning to Earth.
NASA selected a safer strategy by transferring Williams and Wilmore to SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission after their ISS departure in September 2024. Space Agency shortened the mission of Crew-9 to two astronauts from the initial four personnel serving their destination.
Crew-9 said their tearful goodbye to their ISS partners after Crew-10 joined the station on Sunday morning. With their long-awaited return complete, Williams and Wilmore will now focus on regaining their strength after an unexpectedly extended mission in space
