Each year on December 23 in honor of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth prime minister…

Digital Desk: National Farmers’ Day, or Kisan Divas, is observed in India each year on December 23 celebrating the birth anniversary  of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth prime minister. During its term from 1979 to 1980, this minister was instrumental in taking forward the segment of agriculture as well as the rights of farmers. That is why his policies were aimed at the improvement of the land law, the increase of agricultural production, and concern for the farmer, which influenced the future development of the rural and agricultural domains.

December 23 was observed as National Farmers’ Day in order to honor the great Tractor King and his contributions to the farming fraternity. Despite that Singh is no longer in charge, his work goes on cultivating policies that seek to promote farmers and rural development.

The day celebrates the importance of farmers to the food security and economic stability of the Indian nation. They also focus on problems like i) climate change, ii) the absence of advanced technology, and iii) the importance of reasonable prices for the farmers. Being a model, this year’s theme is “Empowering ‘Annadatas’ for a Prosperous Nation,” highlighting the cause of the upliftment of farmers for the nation’s development.

It means that different celebrations take place across the country in honor of National Farmers’ Day. Some of the fetes include policy-related conferences and seminars on agricultural policies and new changes, a farmer award ceremony, a farming technology exhibition, and rural culture awareness campaigns through song and drama.

This day is a wake-up call to appreciate and work for a worthy reform that seeks to better the farmers’ lives. This is their victory and hard-earned pride of overcoming all odds, of feeding the nation, and leading its future.
