The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise the issue of violation of the journalist's human rights.

Digital Desk: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) India has taken the suo motu cognizance of the arrest of journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumdar during his coverage of the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd protest for financial irregularities that took place at Guwahati on 25th March  2025.

A media report stated that the journalist of a digital news portal was called to the Panbazar Police Station and detained after writing about the bank protests outside the building. The allegations claim the journalist questioned the bank's Managing Director regarding banking mismanagement. However, officials  did not provide any information regarding his arrest.

The NHRC  observed that if the claims presented in news reports  are true in any way, then it raises serious concerns regarding the violation of both human rights and press freedom protections for the journalist. The Commission has requested a four-week detailed report from the Director General of Police (DGP) Assam about the incident.

The protest in front of the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd was organized to demand both a financial mismanagement inspection through a high-level investigation and severe consequences for responsible personnel.
Press freedom functions as an essential democratic foundation, which makes the NHRC's intervention emphasize the requirement to protect journalists from unwanted harassment or imprisonment while performing their duties.
