Digital Desk: A  sanitation worker was killed following an alleged assault by fish vendors in Digboi’s Chariali Market on Thursday morning, triggering protests and tension in the area.


The deceased, identified as Buddheshwar Garh, a resident of Bogapani Tea Estate and an employee of the Digboi Municipal Board, had reportedly gone to the market to carry out his routine cleaning duties. He was allegedly accused of stealing fish from an abandoned box, following which several fish vendors brutally assaulted him before handing him over to the police.


Buddheshwar was later taken to Digboi Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.The incident sparked outrage, with residents of Bogapani Tea Estate staging a massive protest at Digboi Civil Hospital, demanding justice for the victim.


Considering the tense situation, the administration shifted the detained accused to Tinsukia police custody as a precautionary measure.


Digboi Police have detained five persons in connection with the incident — Sher Khan, Ramzan Khan, Arjit Ali, Bikram Sahani, and Sonu Bhattacharya. An investigation is currently underway.
