Digital Desk: TikTok is preparing for a total shutdown in the United States on Sunday if the Supreme Court does not block a law that will ban the app. According to reports, around 170 million Americans use the Chinese app TikTok.
The Washington Post reported that President-elect Donald Trump might issue an order to delay the enforcement of the shutdown for 60 to 90 days.
According to reports, if the law is enforced in the US, then it will endorse a ban on new TikTok downloads on Apple or Google app stores. However, old users can still use the app.
Donald Trump said that he should get some time to find a proper solution to the issue. Trump's National Security Advisor Mike Waltz told Fox News, "TikTok itself is a fantastic platform. We're going to find a way to preserve it but protect people's data."
ByteDance has refused to sell TikTok's US operation, but experts think that a consideration on the decision might take place as the US market is huge. TikTok has around 7,000 employees in the US.
President Joe Biden signed a law that demands ByteDance to sell its US operations by January 19 or end its ties with TikTok. He also stated that if TikTok does not follow the law, the short video platform must be ready to face a nationwide ban.
Despite several requests by Trump and other lawmakers, the Supreme Court is seemingly inclined to uphold the law. The future of TikTok remains uncertain as it is now depending on the legislative decisions.
