These two true leaders represent two sides of the same coin…

Digital Desk: Indians celebrate 2nd October as the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. However, what often gets neglected is that this day also honors the birth of another prominent figure in India's history – Lal Bahadur Shastri, the country's second Prime Minister. They represent two sides of the same coin that shaped India's journey toward freedom and progress.

Mahatma Gandhi is a global icon of non-violence and truth. His philosophy of non-violence was the key instrument in uniting India’s diverse population against British colonial rule. His teachings continue to inspire movements for peace and justice worldwide.

However, let us not forget the prominent leadership of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri was an active member in India’s freedom struggle. He was imprisoned several times during his lifetime for his role in India’s freedom struggle. During his tenure as the Prime Minister, he signed the Tashkent agreement with Pakistan's Prime Minister Ayub Khan to end the Indo-Pakistan war in 1965.

Shastri’s famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer) highlights the significance of agriculture, as it is the primary source of livelihood for large sections of Indians.  Shastri’s simple lifestyle reflected the Gandhian principles of service and honesty.

2nd October therefore, is not only about Gandhi's vision but is also about Shastri’s continuous dedication. Together, these two genuine patriots serve as the reminder that building one free nation requires sacrifice and rational decisions. Let us pay tribute to the legacies of both. Gandhi and Shastri, whose contributions continue to shape the soul of modern India.
