Digital Desk: The Union Cabinet on Friday approved the Guwahati Ring Road project, marking a significant investment of Rs 5,729 crore. This decision was made by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 121-km Guwahati Ring Road will be developed in Build Operate Toll (BOT) mode, divided into three sections: a 4-lane Access-Controlled Northern Guwahati Bypass (56 km), the widening of the existing 4-lane bypass on NH 27 to 6 lanes (8 km), and the improvement of the existing bypass on NH 27 (58 km). Additionally, a major bridge over the river Brahmaputra will be constructed as part of the project.
This Ring Road aims to provide seamless connectivity to long-distance traffic on National Highway 27 (the East-West Corridor), serving as a crucial gateway to the North-East Region of the country. The project is expected to alleviate congestion on major National Highways around Guwahati, enhancing connections to major cities and towns in the region, including Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, Jogigopha, and Barpeta.
In a related development, the Cabinet also approved the development of eight significant National High-Speed Corridor projects spanning 936 km at a cost of Rs 50,655 crore across the country. These projects are anticipated to generate an estimated 4.42 crore mandays of direct and indirect employment, further boosting the nation's infrastructure and economy.
